Thought of the Day

You, um, figure it out.

Still considering how and if to weigh in on the whole Imus debacle.

I know CNN's headline last night was "Imus suspended over racial tirade." I know it wasn't a tirade.

I know that America loves to jump on the sensitivity bandwagon, and I know many folks are calling for Imus' ouster.

I know much of this makes no sense to OMS.

We, as a collective society, tolerate hate speech in just about every medium, and we only go after the easy targets. That's insane. Go after the hard ones, too, and while you're at it, look in the mirror. What's the saying about those glass houses over there?

I keep thinking about three things:

1) remember the Office episode when Michael unleashes an Indian accent ("Do you want a slushee?") during sensitivity training? Haha funny, right? But where does one draw the line?

2) Two summers ago, while watching Pimp My Ride with a very good/best friend, OMS unfortunately said, "Wow, I didn't realize Xhibit was so well spoken" and our very good/best friend threatened to kill us. We realize it was a stupid and ignorant thing to say. And fight-worthy. But a discussion ensued. Point made, point understood.

3) OMS, about 10 years ago, went to a corporate sensitivity training thing and was the *only* one to stand in the corner marked "It's OK to make fun of people." The *only* one.

Now, that's just folks not being honest with themselves. My logic, at the time and especially now, is no one -- no one -- is exempt from goofing. Especially ourselves.

Comedy is just that. If you don't like it, change the channel. If you disagree, make your point and I'll listen to you.

In the meantime, can we talk about what the words mean and why they are considered offensive and what we can learn about them? That's the lesson hurtful things bring. How does one listen to different points of view, and how can one learn from them?

Imus has received enough backlash, no?

Huh. Guess OMS isn't weighing his options as to what to say.
